Father God we thank you for your blessed Word and we just release our faith to you tonight for healing in Jesus Name! satan we come against your schemes and anxieties and fears in Jesus Name we bind you and rebuke you and cast you out of this study before during and after the lesson. Jesus we look to you high and lifted up, who bore our sins and diseases on the cross, we look to you as our Healer and give you praise! Holy Spirit, you are the teacher of our new nature, we look to you to testify of Jesus and lead us into all truth. Help us focus on the study in Jesus Name AMEN Today we were scheduled to study something else, and it seemed that I just "couldn't get into it". I was concerned because I didn't feel prepared to teach it. But the Lord had other plans and woke me up this morning with this on my heart for you: The Manifestation of YOUR Healing. Manifestation means revelation, showing forth, and bringing into reality. It's not that you can't be healed, but how can you bring your healing into reality? YOUR - knowing about healing in theory is not helpful when you are ill. "How DO I get healed?" is the question we will try to help you answer. I say "help" because I do not presume to know all there is about healing. We all have had some experience with healing, and as we put our knowledge together, we will come closer to an answer for YOU. Now if you aren't suffering in your body tonight, you probably will sooner or later, or possibly you have a family member or a friend who is ill. At any rate, this is information everyone can use! "Healing" is the PROCESS by which we receive relief from pain, deliverance from symptoms, reversal of deterioration, regeneration of bodily functions and restoration to full health, physically, mentally and spiritually. There is no "magic wand" or "secret formula" to healing. Our God is not a "push button" machine, where if you just push the right combination of buttons, you get what you want when you want it. Although it is inspiring and faith-building to hear or read about the healing experiences of others, it is important to remember that HOW your healing manifests itself is a personal experience with Jesus YOUR Savior. We will look at several ways that healing is manifested, but be open to how the Lord wants to work in YOUR life. I can't stress enough that healing is a process and part of your relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. The key to YOUR healing lies in getting closer and closer and closer to the HEALER, the Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, don't expect your healing to manifest OUTSIDE of the provision of salvation. We will attempt to answer such questions as: Where did sickness (including all sorts of diseases, disabilities and disablements) come from? Is it God's will to heal us or does He obtain pleasure from making us sick? What are some vehicles or helps for healing? Why are some not healed? First of all, what is the origin of sickness? Why do we become ill? Why are some born with disabilities? Why are some injured in accidents? Or the greater question, how can a loving God allow these things to occur? God did not design mankind to be sick, and disease in itself brings Him no glory. Does Psalm 103:2-3 say "Praise the Lord, O my soul, who CAUSES ALL my diseases"? NO, it says " Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-- who forgives all your sins and HEALS ALL YOUR DISEASES". Now our attitude of faith and trust during an illness can and will bring glory to God, but not the fact that we are sick.Genesis 1:31 God saw all that he had made, and it was VERY GOOD. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day. When God created mankind, He proclaimed "It is good!". There was no disease in Eden, and the healing properties of the Tree of Life not only insured immortality, but perfect health. Genesis 2:8-9 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 3:22 And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and LIVE FOREVER." In Eden, man was spiritually alive and communed with God in person EVERY day - and was designed to do so for all eternity. So if God didn't design mankind to be sick, and didn't bring sickness into paradise, where did it come from?
We recall, of course, the story of satan's temptation and man's fall. Man's own rebellion was the cause of every illness that has manifested itself since. When mankind rebelled against God's provision and commandment, we became spiritually dead, subject to sin and death. And we've been sick ever since!
Good question hopin - yes, we can be physically alive but spiritually dead. Our spirit is that part on the inside that can commune with God and hear from Him directly. Man lost that ability when he fell. When we are "born again", "born from above", saved , etc, what get's reborn is not our bodies, but our spirits. We receive a NEW NATURE from God that is able to commune with Him as Adam did! Most people don't realize that spiritually because of Jesus the limits are off!
So now in Jesus Christ we CAN communicate with God our Father once again - Jesus reclaimed what was lost when Adam sinned. Well our spirits are not limited like our bodies are - when we were sinners we had an unlimited capacity for evil. Now as believers, we have an unlimited potential for righteousness - right living with God - and spiritual growth.
Our way of access to the Father is through Jesus Christ - our ONLY way. See it was our sin that separated us from God since Adam, and all our religious efforts (our works) could not make us good enough to approach God, for He is holy. But Jesus became sin FOR US, paid the penalty for our sin (which was death - spiritual and physical) and made a way for us IN HIM to come to God our creator and Father. Now we can cry, ABBA Father, as we talked about last time. What were the results of the fall? Enmity, hatred and fear arose between man and animal, where before there was only peace. Venom and poison came about, and pain and suffering. The ground was cursed, and does not yield its crops without toil. Thorns and thistles sprang us, and work became a sweat-soaked drudgery instead of a joy. And as man became infected with death, the ultimate goal of disease, our bodies became subject to all manner of illness, disablements and diseases. Did God do this to His creation? By no means!!! In a cooperative effort, man and satan conspired against God and His provision for life and health, and brought about the loss of our glory. Can we blame God for illness, disease, disfigurements, disablements or any other perversion of His perfect creation? If we do, we are fools. What is God's provision for our healing? God could have just said, "Well, you've made your bed, now lie in it!" He could have turned His holy back on us, and leave us to the fruits of our sin. But, no, from the very beginning, God has made provision for the forgiveness of our sins and the healing of the whole man. Genesis 3:21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. The first animal sacrifice, or covering for sin (atonement) was made my God. He had pity on the nakedness of Adam and Eve, and the useless attempt for them to cover their sin with leaves, and slew the first animals to make them garments. In Eden, His glory had clothed them with garments of light, which they lost by disobedience. Throughout the Bible the NEED for healing is acknowledged, and the SOURCE of healing is always God. In the Old Testament, one of God's names and attributes is Jehovah-Rapha, or "God our Healer". Healing is a part of the Old Testament covenant with God, and was based on obedience.
Exactly hopin, a covenant is a contract between 2 or more people (or between man and God) that has blessings if the agreement is kept, and curses (or penalties) if it is not. The Old Testament Covenant was based on obedience to God's Law and animal sacrifice.
Yes hopin, breaking the covenant is one cause of illness... we will get more into that later. No God doesn't give us the disease. When He made us originally it was WITHOUT disease. The source of illness and pain is the devil. And we gave him permission to afflict us when we rebelled against God. Exodus 15:26 He said, "If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you." Many of the Old Testament laws were designed to protect Israel from communicable diseases, and the sanitary and dietary restrictions were health giving. For example, they were not to eat pork, which was wise in the days of no refrigeration. Pork is one of the meats which can easily carry a parasite, trichinosis, than can infect humans. A very interesting book in this context is "None of These Diseases" by S. I. McMillen, M.D. As we've mentioned before, in Psalm 103:2-3, David declares that God heals ALL of his diseases: Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-- who forgives all your sins and HEALS ALL YOUR DISEASESMalachi 4:2 states that: But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with HEALING in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall. Note that the healing in the Old Testament is dependent on a reverent attitude and obedience to the Law. In Isaiah 53, the coming of the Messiah as Suffering Servant is predicted, along with provision for healing in the New Testament covenant: Isaiah 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. "Infirmities" in verse 4 in the Hebrew is choliy {khol-ee'} meaning sickness and translated variously as sickness, disease, grief, or sick. This comes from the root word chalah {khaw-law'} meaning to be or become weak, be or become sick, be or become diseased, be or become grieved, be or become sorry. It denotes a state of physical or mental distress that Jesus "took up" or carried for us SO WE DON'T HAVE TO. "Took up" comes from the Hebrew nasa' {naw-saw'} or nacah {naw-saw'} meaning to lift up, to bear, carry, support, sustain, endure or to take, take away, carry off, forgive. Jesus bore our infirmities, diseases for us. He took them off of our backs and carried them away. Of course the devil will try to "put them on us" again, and we must exercise our faith to keep that from happening! We must refuse the infirmities, illnesses and griefs that Jesus has already carried away from us! "Healed" in the Hebrew is rapha' {raw-faw'} or raphah {raw-faw'} meaning to [physically] heal, make healthful (whether by God or a physician), or figuratively of hurts of nations involving restored favor, of individual distresses. I mention this because some interpret this verse only to include spiritual salvation, and not the healing of our bodies! In Luke 1:31, Gabriel told Mary, "You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus." In the New Testament, healing is given even greater focus as being part of the grace of our salvation. The very Name Jesus, Iesous {ee-ay-sooce'} in the Greek, from the Hebrew Yeshua or Joshua means "Jehovah is salvation". Salvation in the Greek is soteria {so-tay-ree'-ah} meaning deliverance from the molestation of enemies, preservation, safety, HEALTH, and salvation, including our future salvation, the sum of benefits and blessings which the Christians, redeemed from all earthly ills, will enjoy after the visible return of Christ from heaven in the consummated and eternal kingdom of God. When people proclaim that they believe in the "whole gospel for the whole man" what they mean is that our salvation is more than "pie in the sky bye and bye", but a full and abundant life here, not only forgiveness of sin, but deliverance and freedom from demonic oppression and healing of the whole man, body, mind and spirit.
Through faith in Jesus hopin - that is how we receive from God... by claiming the promises by faith, refusing to doubt until they are manifested in our life. At the same time resisting the enemy, satan. RT VERY good ? that we will try to answer as we go along. hopin it's subsitution - He took our penalty for us. Like if someone you loved got the death penalty and you took their place. And identification - as we identify with what Jesus did for us, we take on His nature. 1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. Jesus' suffering, as predicted in Isaiah 53, bought not only our redemption (being bought back from the kingdom of satan), but our healing as well. Notice that in Isaiah 53 which pictured the reality of Jesus' suffering AS IT WAS HAPPENING, it says by His wounds (stripes) we ARE healed, present tense, as it was occurring on the cross. But Peter, looking BACK to what was accomplished on the cross, stated, " by his wounds you HAVE BEEN healed". Healing is a reality that has ALREADY BEEN accomplished for us on the cross. All healing is divine, that is, it has its source in God. There are three basic ways that healing comes to us, according to the Bible: the natural healing abilities of the body, through medicine & doctors, and supernatural or "faith" healing.
Psalm 139: 14 "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." 1. Natural healing abilities of the body:
1 Corinthians 3:16 "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?" 1 Corinthians 6:19 "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;" To cooperate with our natural healing processes, we need to get proper exercise, eat a balanced diet and get the proper amount of rest. We disturb our natural healing properties by excess anxiety, abuse of harmful substances and over stressing our selves physically and mentally. Proverbs 14:30 "A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones." A lot of emphasis today is placed on preventing osteoporosis, a degenerative disease of the bone, particularly in women. Calcium is important of course, but don't overlook the importance of a peaceful heart! And envy does all sorts of negative things to the body and mind! Dr. S. I. McMillen* in "None of These Diseases" says: "Peace does not come in capsules! This is regrettable because medical science recognizes that emotions such as fear, sorrow, envy, resentment and hatred are responsible for the majority of our sicknesses. Estimates vary from 60 per cent to nearly 100 percent." He continues: "Emotional stress can cause high blood pressure, toxic goiter, migraine headaches, arthritis, apoplexy, heart trouble, gastrointestinal ulcers, and other serious diseases too numerous to mention. As physicians we can prescribe medicine for the symptoms of these diseases, but we can not do much for the underlying cause - emotional turmoil. It is lamentable that peace does not come in capsules." Proverbs 17:22 "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." And how about the health benefits of a cheerful heart instead of a crushed spirit?
Exactly hopin! and that is why we are here: to help you get rid of the stuff and circumstances that are crushing your heart! We are here to pray with you, counsel with you, teach you - to do everything we can to help you get set free and made whole. Hallelujah! And the same for anyone else in need.
And we also rely on our brothers and sisters in Christ when WE need help! And are thankful that there are so many caring people here that join with us in prayer for our needs as well!
Proverbs 16:24 "Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones." Pleasant words, especially words of life from the Bible sweeten the soul and bring healing to the bones.
As these natural healing processes usually don't come to our attention, we must not forget how wonderful they are and do all we can to take care of ourselves and cooperate with the way God designed us. A very interesting book along this line is "The Chemistry of the Blood" by Martin R. DeHaan, MD. If you are struggling with a health problem, are you doing all you can to take care of yourself, eat properly, get enough rest and get moderate exercise? Do you have a cheerful and peaceful heart, or one full of strife, worry and envy? Paul had great advice along this line: Philippians 4:8 Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable --if anything is excellent or praiseworthy -- think about such things. So the first provision for our healing is the natural healing processes that God our creator designed in our bodies. We need to eat a balanced diet, get plenty of rest, moderate exercise, and work on our thought life! This is part of healing that to a large degree lies within our own hands. 2. Medicine and doctors:
Doctors have been granted much wisdom by God and often have the remedy for what ails us, by a combination of medicine, various therapies, life-style advice and perhaps surgical intervention. Colossians 4:14 "Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings." The physician Luke wrote the books of Luke and Acts in the New Testament, and practiced medicine in conjunction with his ministry. There is no sin in seeking medical advice, but it should be used wisely.
Matthew 9:12 "On hearing this, Jesus said, It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.'" Notice that Jesus did NOT say it is a sin to go to the doctor! He said the sick NEED a physician. Of course, Jesus is the GREAT physician! The Pharisees taught - that sickness is ALWAYS a result of sin, but that is not always the case. In a way the entry of sin into the world when Adam rebelled IS the cause of all disease. BUT in an individual's life, sin may or may not be the cause of any given disease or disability. Aging certainly causes problems, as do accident, contagion, etc.
Personally I can't understand the logic of those who refuse the help of medical intervention. All that doctors to is try to cooperate with the healing processes of our bodies to make them work better.
3. Divine Healing:
Peter and John were going to the temple one day, when a man crippled from birth, who was lying at the Beautiful Gate (what a contrast!), begged them for some money. God had in mind something better! Peter simply told him to walk in the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Peter reached out and helped him up, and THEN his feet and ankles became strong. Peter confirmed later that the healing was in Jesus Name and the faith that comes through Him. Now how the beggar was able to have such instantaneous faith, we are not told. But he was healed in Jesus Name! What awesome power - to instantly heal a man born crippled!
Acts 4:30 "Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus." One of the prayers of the early church that we have recorded is for God to stretch out his hand to heal and perform signs and wonders in Jesus Name. Wonder what would happen today if we made that petition an earnest and heartfelt prayer?
James 5:14-15: "Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven." I have heard of many testimonies where someone was deathly ill and had no hope from medicine. And they would read the Word, take it at face value and call for the elders of the church to come and pray and anoint them with oil - even where their particular denomination didn't believe that healing is for today! And they would be raised up to the glory of God, and the elders would have to make a "theological adjustment" in their way of thinking! LOL Many churches anoint with oil for healing as a usual practice. And notice that this method of healing also carries a provision for the forgiveness of sin, if the person is guilty of something. Again we see where salvation involves forgiveness of sin AND healing for the body.
This may be the LEAST popular mode of healing! LOL To have to confess your faults is certainly difficult. But oh, the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit when we do admit our faults and shortcomings. According to the scripture, healing may be blocked if you do NOT confess your sins one to another and pray for each other. Another reason why we need unity in the Body of Christ!
Acts 10:38: " how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him." We should follow Jesus' example because He has given us the Great Commission and the authority to use His Name. We should go about doing good and bringing healing and deliverance from the power of the enemy. AMEN Are you afraid to pray for someone else's healing because they might NOT get healed and you would feel responsible? Remember you are a SERVANT, not the SAVIOR. You pray, and if God heals fine, if He doesn't, it's not your responsibility. NEVER hesitate to pray for the healing of others. 3 John 1:2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. Weve studied that maturity is essential to the Christian life in previous lessons. As we mature in Jesus, and our soul "prospers" or gets along well, it should also come to pass that we enjoy good health and that all may go well with us also. After all the more we become like our Healer, and the closer we get to His heart, the more our physical bodies should reflect that life. Now don't get me wrong here. As long as we live in the flesh, we will be subject to disease, and if the Lord delays His Coming, even to death. And if you are struggling with a chronic condition of some kind, it doesn't mean that God loves you less or that your faith is necessarily lacking. We should NEVER make someone's illness an occasion for condemnation!
AMEN suebq, that is VERY important, and one of my points somewhere along the line!
In agreement subeq! And a bunch of sick believers are limited in their ministry also. What we are trying to do here is help YOU find YOUR manifestation of healing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Now we've seen that God makes (at least) three provisions for healing - our bodies' natural healing, physicians, and "faith" healing.
Isn't it odd how easily we accept and EXPECT our body's natural healing processes, and most have no problems going to the doctor and expecting results, but somehow to have faith that the God that created you can also heal you without yours or the doctor's help is VERY hard for us?
Song, first settle it in your heart that it IS God's will to heal. Then submit to HIS timing ... after all, when Jesus comes or when we go to be with Him, our healing is complete isn't it? I respect God too much to DEMAND anything. But as His child, I do have the right to claim any promise that He's given in His Word, trusting in Him to bring it to pass in HIS timing.
So let's review what we've covered so far. First of all the reason for this study was to help you receive the manifestation of YOUR healing. The Lord woke me up this morning with this lesson on my heart for someone here! We discussed that there is no "magic" formula here, and that healing arises out of our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. God originally created us WITHOUT sickness, and that sickness is a result of man's disobedience and rebellion against God. From the beginning, God has made provision for BOTH our healing and redemption from sin. In the Old Testament one of the Names used for God is Jehovah-Rapha, God our Healer. Healing in the Old Testament was the result of obedience to God's Laws. Indeed, following the Law actually prevented a lot of illness.
AMEN jhawk, isn't that awesome? We talked about the fact that the coming of Jesus was predicted in Isaiah 53, and that His suffering was to bear our sins AND our infirmities, diseases, sicknesses, etc. In the New Testament, the very Name of Jesus, meaning Jehovah is salvation, contained the ideas of forgiveness of sins AND healing. Then we talked about the three provisions God has given us for healing: the natural healing processes of our body, doctors & medicine, and then what is usually called "divine" or faith healing. Then we talked about 4 ways to receive faith healing: through the name of Jesus, through anointing with oil, through confession and prayer, and through gifts of healing given to certain individuals by the Holy Spirit.
gman, either together or separately - the point is to seek the HEALER and not get hung up on methods. And there may be more ... the Holy Spirit is still showing me things about it. Next time, we'll discuss "points of contact" events that help us extend our faith, and tackle the question, Why are some NOT healed? Father God we pray that you will bless the seeds sown here tonight, and help each and every one have more faith for THEIR OWN healing, and be better equipped to pray for the healing of others. Remember, whenever God gives us a revelation, the devil tries to steal it from us. Guard your hearts and meditate on what you've learned! And put it into practice. |
