The Unpardonable Sin, Part 1

The Question:

I am really scared. What exactly is blasphemy? I heard in one of the chat room Bible studies that if you do it you will go to hell even if you are a Christian. (Which I am) I think I might have done it. Will I go to hell now? Can a real Christian blaspheme against the Holy Spirit?

The Answer:

Matthew 12:31-32 And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Luke 12:10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

Blasphemy (as in Matt 12, etc.) is blasphemia {blas-fay-me'-ah} AV - blasphemy 16, railing 2, evil speaking 1; 19 1) slander, detraction, speech injurious, to another's good name 2) impious and reproachful speech injurious to divine majesty.Jesus made it very clear that the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that He was referring to was the Pharisees accusing Him of having a demon.

Mark 3:22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebub! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons."

Matthew 9:34 But the Pharisees said, "It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons."Matthew 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons."

So "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit " means saying mean hateful things against the Holy Spirit and His work in the world. The religious leaders in Jesus day accused the Holy Spirit of being the devil ... and said that Jesus was doing the devil's work.

So, if you feel you have committed the unpardonable sin, what exactly did you say against the Holy Spirit, when did you say it and what it you mean by it? If you haven't willfully insulted the Spirit of Grace and called Him a worker of satan, then you haven't blasphemed him. If you've insulted Him in ignorance, I believe you can be forgiven. And any other blasphemy, insults or cursing can be forgiven if you just ask the Lord.

But most people who are worried that they have committed the unpardonable sin, HAVE NOT because their hearts are tender towards God and they want to repent of whatever they said or did.I don't believe you can blaspheme the Holy Spirit without knowing you've done it, meaning to say what you said, and wanting to destroy His work in the earth. In other words, you would have become an apostate - an unbeliever working against Jesus and all He stands for. I believe it comes from a hardening of the heart through sin and unbelief ... not a fear of displeasing God. (See Hebrews 3:7-19; 10:26-31; 12:25).

Can a "REAL" Christian blaspheme against the Holy Spirit? I don't think so! When we are born again, the Holy Spirit begins to live within us and guide us and He certainly isn't going to guide us to blaspheme Himself! Just trust in Jesus and don't fret about this. Keep seeking His will for your life and don't let the devil put fear between you and your Savior! Also if you just feel guilty and condemned and don't have a specific reason for it - that is, the Holy Spirit hasn't brought a specific act to your mind to ask forgiveness for, it is very likely that satan is just trying to bring you under condemnation and fear. In which case, tell him to scat in Jesus Name!
