Why Were We Created?

The Question:

Why Were We Created?

The Answer:

God created the earth and all within it and declared it "Good!" (Genesis 1-2) Of  course the earth as we now know it is subject to sin, death and disease and is merely a reflection of its former glory.

Originally man and woman walked in fellowship and communion with God. But after their sin, when God sought them, they hid from Him: Genesis 3:8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

God created the earth to be inhabited. That is, He created it for us to live in: Isaiah 45:18 For this is what the LORD says-- he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited-- he says: "I am the LORD, and there is no other."

We were created by God's will and for His pleasure: Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. (KJV)

"You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."
(NIV)

Pleasure or will here is thelema {thel'-ay-mah} 1) what one wishes or has determined shall be done 1a) of the purpose of God to bless mankind through Christ 1b) of what God wishes to be done by us, His commands, precepts, will, choice, inclination, desire, pleasure.

God made us to inhabit the earth and to seek Him: Acts 17:24 "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. "

Through the miracle of redemption and salvation, we are created in Christ Jesus to be God's workmanship and to do good works: Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

God's purpose in this was to create one body - the Church- bringing Jews and Gentiles together in peace: Ephesians 2:-16 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth … separate from Christ…without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.

So God's pleasure is in redeeming us - to fellowship with us according to His original design! Praise Him!
